We are an Association of residents living in Arlington, Massachusetts who for 93 years have cooperatively maintained many of the shared roadways of Precinct 12 that are Private Ways.
The Town of Arlington does not maintain Private Ways, so preserving the safety and convenience of these roads is the responsibility of the homeowners. The Association organizes regular maintenance to prolong the life of the road surface, funded exclusively by voluntary member dues.
We are managed by a volunteer board elected at an annual meeting held for all members.
The Arlington Heights Tower Association is a registered nonprofit corporation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

While maintenance funded by your annual dues payment helps forestall major repairs, several road sections now require major repairs to ensure longer-term durability. Completing these repairs will require considerable additional funding. After considering a number of options for accomplishing major repairs, the Association has identified several major approaches outlined here that could be used to accomplish the needed work:
Alternative Repair Options: If full resurfacing is not pursued, residents may consider interim solutions:

Completing these repairs will require considerable additional funding. After considering a number of options for accomplishing major repairs, the Association has identified several major approaches outlined here that could be used to accomplish the needed work:
- Recommended Long-Term Solution: Full Resurfacing through the Town’s Betterment Program (Estimated $6,000 per household) See Town of Arlington Bylaw Title III, Article 3 for details about the process. The most durable and cost-effective solution is a full resurfacing—a complete overhaul following municipal paving standards, but at significant cost. This could be used to resurface individual roads or groups of roads on which 2/3 of the affected abutters vote to proceed with repairs.
Alternative Repair Options: If full resurfacing is not pursued, residents may consider interim solutions:
- One-Time Contributions for Targeted Repairs (~$1,000 per household) Some sections need more intensive repair beyond routine patching. Voluntary contributions from members could help improve some of the worst areas, though repair scope may be uneven based on participation. While this would also require a higher level of organization, it may allow repairs to happen in months rather than years.
- Continue Minimal Crack Sealing & Patching (~$100 per household) Routine maintenance, as done annually. However, worsening road conditions make this an increasingly inadequate and economically inefficient solution.
